Holiday Party Planning Done Right

As we approach the vacation season, generally awash with holiday parties, it got me thinking about how staff are rewarded. Actually one of the chief reasons for hosting a company vacation party is to reward workers for their difficult work and dedication, and there may be financial reasons as well.&nbsp ;

a holiday party does something else too. It creates a space for staff and management to get together not as employees, but as mates. It provides a chance for folks to get together and experience the company of the people you work with without being worried about the final analysis, which is something that isn’t happen much across the year. Sure there might be finance benefits ( see the article linked above ), but this is essentially achieved by creating a little bit of goodwill that goes a long way. It lets your people know that you put a value on them and their work. So when I see that firms are deciding against doing a party thanks to the economy I fret about the message this sends to&nbsp ; workers, many of whom doubtless anticipate and expect some variety of year end celebration. When times are difficult, which definitely is the case in several industries, it’s especially important to show employees you care.

If you usually do a luxurious celebration, of course it’s comprehensible that you’d cut back a bit, but do not lose the party altogether. Do it smaller, faster and smarter. You can change the scale without spoiling the event. If you normally hire a star comedian, as an example, consider using talent locally. If you typically do an indulgent meal, do a buffet, or a potluck. My point is do something. If you can afford to use holiday party entertainment, I’d definitely commend it. Using a corporate comedian is a good way to get people’s’s minds off the economy for 45-60 mins and it gives your guests a common experience to chat ( and joke ) about for months to come and leaves everyone feeling better ( nicely timed for the vacations ).
